19:31-42 By
then it was the Jewish preparation time (for the feast). The Jews did not want the bodies to
remain on the cross during the great Sabbath day so they asked Pilate that
the legs (of those crucified) might be broken so they could be taken
away. The soldiers therefore
came and broke the legs of the first and the other one that was crucified
with him (Jesus). But on coming
to Jesus they saw that he had already died. They therefore did not break his
legs but one of the soldiers pricked his side with his spear. Immediately blood and water came
out. The one recounting this is
a witness to it because he saw it and his witness is true. He is speaking the truth so that you
(the reader) may believe. These
things truly did happen so that Scripture might be fulfilled when it says
"Not a bone of his shall be broken." And again another part of Scripture
says "They shall look at him whom they

have
pierced." Now after these
things Joseph from Arimathea
approached Pilate. He had been
a disciple of Jesus but was secret (about this) because of his fear of the
Jews. He asked asked that he might take the body of Jesus. Pilate
allowed this. He therefore came
and took his body. Nicodemus,
the one who had come to him (Jesus) by night earlier on, also came
(forward). He brought a mixture
of myrrh and aloes that weighed about a hundred pounds. They therefore took the body of
Jesus and bound it into sheets with the spices according to the burial
custom of the Jews. Now there
was in the place where he was crucified a garden, and in the garden there
was a new tomb. No one had ever
been put there. It was there
therefore, that because it was the preparation (time) for the Jews and
because (this tomb) was nearby that they put Jesus.
