5          the twelve disciples deny betrayal

26:20-25

26:20 Evening and coming he reclined with the twelve disciples 21 And eating them he said: Truly I tell you that one of you will betray me. 22 And grieving exceedingly they began to say them one each: Not I am Lord? 23 And he answering said: The one dipping with me the hand in the dish, this man me will betray. 24 Indeed Son of

man goes? as it has been written concerning him. but woe man to that through whom the Son of man is betrayed; good were it for him if was not born the man that.25 And answering the Judas the one betraying him said: Not I am, rabbi? He says to him: Thou saidst

6.         the disciples initiated into covenant

26:26-29

26:26-29 And eating them taking the Jesus a loaf and blessing he broke and giving to the disciples said: Take y eat ye: this is the body of me 27 And taking a cup and giving thanks he gave to them saying: Drink ye of it all. 28 for this is the blood

being shed for forgiveness of sins. 29 I tell and you, by no means will I drink from now of this fruit of the vine until day that when it I drink with you new in the kingdom of the Father of me.

7          all the disciples claim on-going loyalty

26:30-35

26:30 And having sung a hymn they went forth to the mount of the olives. 31 Then says to them the Jesus: All ye will be offended in me to-night; it has been written for: I will strike the shepherd, and will be scattered the sheep of the flock; 32 but after the to be raised me I will go before you to Galilee 33 answering And the Peter said to

him. If all men shall be offended in thee, I never will be offended. 34 Said to him Jesus Truly I tell thee that to-night before a cock to crow three times thou wilt deny me. 35 Says to him the Peter; Even if it behoves me with thee to die, by no means thee I will deny. Likewise also all the disciples said.

8          the disciples asked for support

26:36-44

26:36 Then comes with them Jesus to a piece of land called Gethsemane, and says to the disciples; Sit ye here until going away there I may pray. 37 And taking the Peter and the two sons of Zebedee he began to grieve and to be

distressed 38 Then he says to them: Deeply grieved is the soul of me unto death; remain ye here and watch ye with me. 39 And going forward a little he fell on the face of him praying and saying: Father of me, if possible it is, let pass from me the cup this; yet not as I will but as thou

9          the disciples fall asleep

26:40-44

26:40 And he comes to the disciples and finds them sleeping, and says to Peter: So were ye not able one hour to watch with me? 41 Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation; indeed the spirit eager, but the flesh weak. 42 Again the second time going away he prayed saying: Father of me, if cannot this

to pass away except it I drink, let be done the will of thee 43 And coming again he found them sleeping for were of them the eyes having been burdened. 44 And leaving them again going away he prayed a third time, the same word saying again

10        the disciples . . . one betrays.

26:45-55

26:45 Then he comes to the disciples and says to them: Sleep ye now and rest; behold has drawn near the hour and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise ye, let us be going behold has drawn near the one betraying me. 47 and still him speaking, behold Judas one of the twelve came, and with him crowd a much with swords and clubs from the chief priests and elders of the people 48 Now the one betraying him gave them a sign saying: Whomever I may kiss he it is; seize ye him 49 And immediately approaching to Jesus he said: Hail rabbi and affectionately kissed him. 50 But Jesus said to him Comrade do that on what thou art here. Then approaching they laid the hands on Jesus and seized him  51

And behold one of the ones with Jesus stretching out the hand drew the sword of him, and striking the slave of the high priest cut off of him the ear. 52 Then says to him Jesus Put back the sword of thee into the place of it; for all the ones taking a sword by a sword will perish. 53 Or thinkest thou that I cannot to ask the Father of me, and he will provide me now more than twelve legions of angels? 54 how then may be fulfilled the Scriptures that thus it must be? 55 In that hour said Jesus to the crowds: As against a robber came ye forth with swords and clubs to take me? daily in the temple I sat teaching, and not ye seized me.

11        the disciples all leaving him fled

26:56-27:56

26:56 But this all has come to pass that may be fulfilled the Scriptures of the prophets. Then the disciples all leaving him fled. 57 But the

ones having seized Jesus led him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled. 58 And Peter followed him from afar up to the court of the high

priest, and entering within sat with the attendants to seethe end.59 And the chief priests and the council whole sought false witness against Jesus so as him they might put

to death, 60 and did not  find many approaching false witnesses But later approaching two  said: This man said: I can to destroy the shrine of God and after three days to build.  62 And standing up the high priest said to him: Nothing answerest thou, what these men thee give evidence against? 63 But Jesus remained  silent and the high priest said to him: I adjure thee by God the living that us thou tell if thou art the Christ the Son of God. 64 Says to him Jesus: Thou saidst; yet I tell you, from now ye will see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of the power and coming on the clouds of heaven. 65 Then the high priest rent the garments of him saying: He blasphemed[; what yet need have we of witnesses? behold now ye heard the blasphemy; 66 What to you seems it?

And they answering said: Liable of death he is. 67 then they spat in the fact of him and violently maltreated him, and they slapped him 68 saying: Prophesy thou to us, Christ, who is it the one having struck thee 69 And Peter sat outside in the court;

so as to put to death him: 2 and having bound him they led away and delivered to Pilate the governor. 3. Then seeing Judas the one having betrayed him that he was condemned, repenting returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders 4 saying: I sinned betraying blood innocent. But they said: What to us? thou shalt see to it. 5 And tossing the pieces of silver into the shrine he departed and going away hanged himself. 6 the But chief priests taking the pieces of silver said: it is not lawful to put them into the treasury, since price of blood it is. 7 So counsel taking they bought of with them the field of the potter for burial for the strangers. 8. Wherefore was called field that Field of blood until today. 9 then was fulfilled the thing spoken through Jeremiah the prophet saying: And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of the one having been priced whom they priced from the sons of Israel. 10 and gave them for the field of the potter, as directed me the Lord. 11 And Jesus stood before the governor; and questioned him the governor saying

Thou art the king of the Jews? And Jesus said: Thou sayest. 12 And in the to be accused him by the chief priests and elders nothing he answered. 13 then says to him the Pilate; Hearest thou not what thins thee they give evidence against 14 And he answered not him to not one word, so as to marvel the governor exceedingly. 15 Now at a feast was accustomed the governor to release one to the crowd prisoner whom they wished. 16 and they had then prisoner a notable named Barrabas. 17 Therefore having assembled them said to them the Pilate: Whom do ye wish I may release to you. Barabbas or Jesus called Christ? 18 For he knew that because of envy they delivered him. 19 Sitting Now him on the tribunal sent to him the wife of him saying: Nothing to thee and just man to that; for many things I suffered today by a dream because of him. 20 But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds that they should ask Barabbas, and Jesus should destroy. 21 So answering the governor said to them:

Which do ye wish from the two I may release to you? And they said: Barabbas.  22 Says to them Pilate: What that may I do (to) Jesus called Christ? They say all: Let him be crucified.  23 But he said: Why what evil did he? But they more cried out saying: Let him be crucified.  24 And seeing Pilate that nothing is gained but rather an uproar occurs taking water he washed the (his) hands in front of the crowd saying: Innocent I am from the blood of this man: ye will see (to it) 25 And answering all the people said: The blood of him on us and on the children of us.  26 Then released to them Barabbas, but Jesus having scourged he delivered that he might be crucified.  27 Then the soldiers of the governor having taken Jesus into the praetorium assembled against him all the band.  28 And stripping him cloak a purple they placed round him.  29 and having plaited a crown of thorns they placed (it) on on the head of him and a reed in the right (hand) of him, and bowing the knee in front of him mocked at him saying:  Hail, king of the Hews, 30 and spitting at him took the reed and struck at the head of him.  31 And when they mocked  at him, they took off him the cloak and put on him the garments of him, and led and approached to him one maidservant saying: Also thou wast with Jesus the Galilean. 70 But he denied before all saying: I know not what thou sayest. 71 And going out into the porch saw him another and says to the ones there: This man was with Jesus the Nazarene. 72 And again he denied with an oath I know not

the man. 73 And after a little approaching the ones standing said to Peter: Truly also thou of them art, for indeed the speech of thee manifest thee makes. 74 Then he began to curse and to swear I know not the man. And immediately a cock crowed. 75 And remembered Peter the word of Jesus having said Before a cock to crow three times thou wilt deny me; and going forth outside he wept bitterly. Ch 27:1 And early morning coming counsel took all the chief priests and the elders of the people against Jesus away him to crucify.32 Going forth and they found a man a Cyrenian, by name Simon; this man they impressed that he should bear the cross of him.  33 And coming to a place called Golgotha which is of a skull a place called, 34 they gave him to drink wine with gall having been mixed and tasting not he would to drink. 35 And having crucified him they divided the garments of him casting a lot.  36 and sitting they guarded him there.  37 And they placed on above the head of him the charge of him having been written.  THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.  38 Then are crucified with him two robbers one on (the) right and one on (the) left.  39 And the (ones) passing by blasphemed him wagging the heads of them 40 and saying: The (one) destroying the shrine and in three days building (it) save thyself, if Son thou art of God and come down from the cross. 41 Likewise also the chief priests mocking with the scribes and elders said:  42 Others he saved, himself he cannot to save; King of Israel he is,

let him come down now from the cross and we will believe on him.  43 He has trusted on God, let him rescue now if he wants him; for he said of God I am Son.  44 And the same who the robbers crucified with  him reproached him.  45 from Now (the) sixth hour darkness occurred over all the land until hour (the) ninth.  46 And about the ninth hour cried out Jesus voice with a great saying:  Eli Eli Lema sabachthani?  This is God of me God of me, why me didst thou forsake?  47 some And of the (ones) there standing hearing said Elias calls this man, 48 And immediately running one of them and taking a sponge and filling of(with vinegar and putting (it) round a reed gave to drink him.  49 But the rest said  Leave let us see if comes Elias saving him.  50 And Jesus again crying out voice with a great released the (his) spirit.  51 And behold the veil of the shrine was rent from above to below in two, and the earth was shaken, and the rocks were rent,  52 and the tombs were opened and many bodies of the having fallen asleep saints were raised; 53 and coming forth out of the tombs after the rising of him entered into the holy city and appeared to many.  54 And the centurion and the (ones) with him guarding Jesus seeing the earthquake and the things happening feared exceedingly saying: Truly of God Son was this man.  55 Now there were there women many from afar beholding who followed Jesus from Galilee ministering to him; 56 among whom was Mary the Magdalene and Mary the of James and of Joseph mother, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.

12        a disciple (Arimathaea) comes forward todisplay respect

            (for body).

26:57-66

26:57 Now evening having come came man a rich from Arimathaea, the name Joseph, who also himself was disciple to Jesus; 58 this man approaching to Pilate asked the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded it to be given him. 59 and taking the body Joseph wrapped it in sheet a clean, 60 and placed it in the new of him tomb which he hewed in the rock, and having rolled to stone a great to the door of the tomb went away. 61 and there was there Mary the Magdalene and the other Mary, sitting opposite the grave. 62 on the morrow, which is after the preparation,

were assembled the chief priests and the Pharisees to Pilate saying: Sir, we remembered that that deceiver said yet living: After three days I am raised. 64 Command therefore to be made fast the grave until the third day, lest coming the disciples may steal him and my say to the people He was raised from the dead, and will be the last deceit worse than the first. 65 Said to them Pilate: Ye have guard go ye make fast as ye know. 66 And they going made fast the grave sealing the stone with the guard.

13        disciples told of new life (resurrection)

28:1-7

Ch 28:1 But late of the Sabbath at the drawing on toward on of the Sabbath came Mary the Magdalene, and the other Mary to view the grave. 2 And behold earthquake occurred a great: for an angel of the Lord descending out of heaven and approaching rolled away the stone and sat upon it. 3 And was the appearance of him as lightning and the dress of him white as snow. 4 And from the fear of him were shaken the ones guarding and

they became as dead. 5 And answering the angel said to the women; Fear not ye; for I know that Jesus the one having been crucified ye seek; 6 he is not here, for he was raised as he said: come see ye the place where he lay.7 And quickly going tell the disciples of him thought he was raised from the dead, and behold he goes before you to Galilee, there him ye will see. Behold I told you.

14        announce to brothers

28:8-10

8 And going away quickly from the tomb with fear and joy great they ran to announce to the disciples of him. And behold Jesus met them saying: Hail and they approaching

held of him the feet and worshipped him. 10 Then says to them Jesus: Fear ye not go ye announce to the brothers of me (note: c/f discipleship?) that they may go away into Galilee, and there me they will see.

15        disciples maligned by others.

28:11-15

11 And going them behold some of the guard coming into the city announced to the chief priests all the things having happened.12 And being assembled with the elders counsel and taking silver enough gave to the soldiers, 13 saying: Say ye that the disciples of him

of night coming steal him we sleeping. 14 And if be heard this before the governor, we will persuade and you free from anxiety we will make. 15 And they taking silver did as they were taught. And was spread about saying this by Jews until today.

16. . . . . eleven disciples . . . to "disciple".

28:16-20

28:16  So the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where appointed them Jesus 17 and seeing him they worshipped, but some doubted. 18 And approaching Jesus talked with them saying: was given to me All authority in heaven and on earth.  19 Going

therefore disciple ye all the nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit 20 teaching them to observe all things whatever I have command to you; and behold I with you am all the days until the completion of the age.

28:19   "Behold I am with you all the days"

(that is,  Jesus will not be ending his words!)
